This volume exposes both the scientific basics and modern methods of high-energy spectroscopic astrophysics. The emphasis is on physical principles and observing methods rather than a discussion of particular classes of high-energy objects, but many examples and new results are included in the three chapters as well. The existence of branes and large extra dimensions could also be sources of modified gravity (e.g., KK gravity). There could exist short distance effects at scales of order the string scale ℓ s which are observable in cosmology or in high energy astrophysics. We shall also consider possible gravitational wave signals from string-cosmology models.

High-energy astrophysics has unveiled a Universe very different from that only known from optical observations. It has revealed many types of objects in which typical variability timescales are as short as years, months, days, and hours (in quasars, X-ray binaries, and other objects), and even down to milli-seconds in gamma ray bursts.

INTRODUCTION TO HIGH-ENERGY ASTROPHYSICS High-energy astrophysics covers cosmic phenomena that occur under the most extreme physical conditions. It explores the most violent events in the Universe: the explosion of stars, matter falling into black holes, and gamma-ray bursts – the most luminous explosions since the Big Bang.

The first edition of High energy astrophysics, published in (see ) established itself as a classic in the teaching of contemporary astronomy.

Reflecting the immense interest and developments in the subject, the author has developed the second edition into three volumes. Using specific problems in astronomy and results from forefront research he develops the essential physics Cited by: Jan 05,  · High Energy Astrophysics M.
